Mike Kroeger založil po střední škole v městečku Hanna v kanadské provincii Alberta kapelu se svým nevlastním bratrem Chadem Kroegrem, který se později stal frontmanem , a se svým kamarádem Ryanem Peakem. Hráli spolu cizí písničky, ale po chvíli je to přestalo bavit a rozešli se. Chadovi se to ale zalíbilo a nevzdal se. Bez problému složil všechny písně na CD "Hesher". Potom tedy přemluvil Mikea a Ryana, aby to s ním ještě zkusili.
S názvem přišel Mike, který pracoval ve Starbucks, když vracel zákazníkům drobné, řekl: "Here is your nickel back". - "Tady máte nicklák nazpátek. CD nakonec vyšlo v roce 1996 díky půjčce čtyř tisíc dolarů od otce Chada a Mikea. Za bicími seděl bratranec Brandon Kroeger. Stačil ještě nabubnovat debutové album "Curb" (vydané v nezávislé distribuci), jenže znelíbil se mu život na cestách, tak odešel. Ještě u Nickelback byl bubeník Mitch Guindon, ale ten po chvilce odešel a nahradil ho bubeník Ryan Vikedal. Ten však později odešel a místo něj nastoupil bubeník Daneil Adair, který je v kapele dodnes.
Kapela vyhrávala regionální soutěže a mohla poslouchat své vlastní písně v místním rádiu. Jejich styl je vlastně takový mix: ALICE IN CHAINS (bez jejich temných zákoutí), SOUNDGARDEN (bez psychedelických excesů), NIRVANY (bez punkové rozjívenosti) a METALLICY (bez thrashových základů); to vše typicky sekaným rytmem. Z grunge si Chad Kroeger vyzobl především emocemi nabitý zpěv, a tak nahráli druhé album "The State" První rozhlasové hity se jmenovaly "Breathe" a "Leader Of Men".
Jejich další album s názvem "Silver Side Up" nese další skvělé hity "How you remind me" a Too Bad". Píseň "How you remind me" je o rozchodu a je adresovaná dívce jménem Jodi. Jenže síla Kroegera jakožto textaře je v tom, že dokáže upřímně reprodukovat pocity z nepříjemných situací, které sám prožil, a zároveň je zahalit do víceznačných formulací, které si každý posluchač může vztáhnout k sobě. Lidi k té písničce mají citový vztah. Píseň je navíc jednoduchá a to obvykle pomáhá." "How You Remind Me" je nejhranější píseň roku 2002 v USA ve všech rozhlasových stanicích dohromady, ačkoli vyšla jako singl už v září 2001. I další dva singly "Too Bad" (kde řeší svůj vztah s otcem, který se odstěhoval od rodiny) a "Never Again" (o domácím násilí) zabodovaly. Alba "Silver Side Up"(2001) se celosvětově prodalo přes sedm milionů kusů... Později natočili další album The Long Road(2003) a nakonec All the Right Reasons v roce 2005.
